SAPPHIRES – GOTTA HAVE YOUR LOVE – ABC Paramount 10639 (1965)
The Sapphires began recording for the Swan record label in 1963 lead by Carol Jackson and backed by Joe Livingston and George Garner. During 1964 the outfit split and Carol Jackson moved to ABC Paramount records where she was backed by Nicholas Ashford, Valerie Simpson and Melba Moore. Carol’s career would become eclipsed by the prolificy of Ashford and Simpson who went on to great things with their singing, song-writing and producing. Melba Moore may be a less familiar name, but she also went on to have a truly wonderful career in the music industry, on the stage and on both films and TV. From humble beginnings…

More great music from the heart of Lancashire can be found on the SOUL VINYL SOUNDS radio shows. A new show is added every week, and you can either listen or download via…

There is no talking over the records: just a brief naming of the tracks, and the music dominates the shows. Comments and requests are welcomed via e.mail – this is classic Northern Soul with a sense of community.

Friday 20th November, and I enjoyed listening to the set played by Tony Brooke of Burscough British Legion, particularly since he picked a few ‘different’ plays out of the box which helped to make his spot both entertaining and interesting. Here is a small selection of those sounds for you to enjoy. Just click on the title to hear the track.

It was great to hear from Tony and Sue, all the way from their hometown of Mandurah, Australia: Tony and Sue run the South West Soul Club, and host their gigs in the magnificent venue that is the Fly By Night Musicians Club in Freemantle. The Club’s motto is “SO MUCH SOUL, SO LITTLE TIME”, and they play soul music that genuinely is across the board. As well as all the local Soulies, they are supported by the Paradise Lost Scooter Club from Perth – great to see the Lambrettas and Vespas on the car park. On 30th January 2010 they will be celebrating their 4th Anniversary with DJ’s Tony T Bone, Susie Q, Barry Turntableterra, Denny Johnson and John Manship (Hopefully). I’m looking forward to hearing a full report of the Anniversary gig, but meanwhile, here are a few of the sounds that get played at the ‘Fly’…

I would appreciate any help in gathering more information about The Cavaliers – a discography would be great – but any snippets of info would help – details of the band and their records – any scans – etc. Please contact me at n.soulchris@hotmail.com |

I was fascinated by an e-mail I received from Nicole, in California, who told me about her mother, Patti Massaglia.
Patti Massaglia, and two other Italian girls, from the East-side of Detroit, sang together as The Young Sisters.
Music manager and record producer, Harry Balk, ‘discovered’ the girls during the summer of 1962, and together they recorded ‘Casanova Brown’ which was the first record released on Balk’s fledgling Twirl label, (JoAnn Courcy, Volumes, etc.)
‘Casanova Brown’ became a hit – and can still be found today for under a tenner.
The Young Sisters worked together from 1962-64, both as a femme trio, and as backing vocalists for Del Shannon, (who was also managed by Harry Balk at the time.)
In 1966, Patti Massaglia released a solo single under the name of Patti Young, and the ‘Head And Shoulders’ single has since become a legendary sound on our Scene.
The ‘Head And Shoulders’ song had also been released, during 1965, by Marlina Mars on the MGM label.
Patti Massaglia, now Patti Lumetta, is alive and well, and still living in Detroit.

When you have finished browsing through this web site, visit YOU TUBE and type NS KTF into the search-engine. There you will find scores of superb soul sounds to enjoy.
